Casita Project

We first walked through this detached unit and had to hold our breath and quickly take a look around. It dawned on us that the previous owners smoked inside, perhaps for the last 40 years as the thick smoke clung to our skin .

The windows were shielded with dark screens to keep out the Arizona summer heat and thick green vines covered the outside windows, limiting light to pass through.

Call me crazy but this small space is one of the things that sealed the deal with the project. I fell in love with the vaulted, wooden ceilings and a separate area for family and friends to stay that was detached from the house.

We bid farewell to smoke-stained cabinets, worn-out carpet, and tired tiles. Despite our attempt to salvage the original cabinets with a fresh coat of white paint, the lingering smoke smell persisted. We even fumigated the 500 sqft space, but the tiles and cabinets didn’t make the cut. Now, after painting the walls and wooden beams white, installing sleek wood floors, new cabinets, and new counter tops the space has truly undergone a transformative upgrade!

We had to get a touch creative with the bathroom as it was very awkward at first. The initial toilet placement wasn’t ideal; any adult sitting down risked hitting their knees on the wall. Luckily, we found a solution: repurposing the covered patio. By reconfiguring the space, we created room for a more spacious vanity and additional storage. Plus, the revamped layout allows for a more comfortable toilet arrangement – no more awkward squatting!

We evicted the closet cabinet system to roll out the welcome mat for more guests! After a deep dive into the digital abyss, I unearthed the perfect bunk beds to help navigate this narrow closet space.

Blocking the beautiful natural sunlight feels suffocating. I adore infusing the essence of the outdoors into a living space. With the addition of a chaise, we’ve created another cozy spot for guests, bringing the total number of beds to a comfortable five! Maximizing every inch of this 500 sqft area.
